Plastic Surgeon Dr. Dean Kane of Baltimore Answers Question Regarding Loss of Sensation after Breast Augmentation

Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa Patient

Q: Will I lose sensation after Breast Augmentation?  I’m thinking about getting a breast augmentation. Nothing crazy but a slight increase in size (B cup to C cup) to help make them more full and perky. If I decide to move forward, is it guaranteed that I’ll lose sensation in my nipples and breasts? If so, is one technique or type of breast implant more likely to cause this? Losing sensation is one of my biggest worries – that and being put under. I was hoping someone could help ease my concerns.

A: There are 2 different areas of sensory changes to the breast with Breast Augmentation.

The incision at the areola or the inframammary crease will leave a patch of skin numbness or tingling after surgery but in my experience has nearly always returned to normal.

The dissection required to create the pocket for the implant may impact on the 6th costal nerve which has special fibers for sensation to the nipple. This nerve maybe stretched, bruised or cut during the procedure no matter how much care is taken to protect it. In 98% of cases, nipple sensation returns but occasionally may be altered.

Rarely will I need to perform a Breast Augmentation under General Inhalant Anesthesia. Mostly, these are performed with IV sedation. Unless you have a complicated medical history, other than a smaller increase in the incidence of nausea and vomiting which is very well controlled with anti-emetic medications has there been any anesthesia concerns.

I hope this is helpful. Please discuss these concerns with your surgeon. Always use a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. All the best!
