There seems to be a confusion for patients who are not sure what is right for them between CoolSculpting, Liposuction, Tummy Tucks and Mommy Makeover or After Weight Loss Surgery. There is also a confusion on what each can accomplish and the length of recovery of each of the procedures. In this blog, I will help to explain each of the procedures and identify the differences. What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is the process of freezing fat cells in which 20 to 25% of fat cells are permanently destroyed in a non-surgical treatment. There are no needles, no anesthesia, no downtime and you can maintain your normal work, activities and lifestyle routines. You are able to drive yourself to the treatment and not have to rely on anyone for help.
CoolSculpting is a very targeted treatment in which applicators are placed on the body in the specific areas you want to reduce. These areas include: Muffin Tops, Lower and Upper Abdomens, Arms, Inner and Outer Thighs, Love Handles, Back/Bra Rolls, Male Chests and Turkey Necks.
Who is a candidate for CoolSculpting?
If you want to target very specific areas of the body and are looking for a 20 to 25% reduction of fat in those targeted areas than you would be a good candidate. If you are looking for a much greater reduction of fat than liposuction may be your better option.
Liposuction
Liposuction is the ideal procedure when you are looking for a dramatic reduction of fat and a full body contour.
Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat through a tumescent cannula that Dr. Kane uses to surgically remove the fat. This is a permanent removal of fat of which Dr. Kane is able to get 80 to 90% of the fat cells permanently destroyed. Liposuction is ideal for individuals looking for full body contours.
Specifically, patients looking to reduce their entire abdomens, love handles and back fat in one procedure than liposuction would be the best option. Dr. Kane can lipocontour all these areas in one surgical procedure. Other areas that can be reduced all at the same time are the back fat, flanks, outer thighs and inner thighs. Patients with large size upper arms are a great candidate for liposuction.
In all cases, a special liposuction garment needs to be worn for 6 to 8 weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within 5 to 14 days depending on how much fat is being removed and the number of areas being liposuctioned. For individuals concerned that they are fairly overweight and need a great motivational boost, liposuction helps to reduce your body 1-2 sizes smaller. But it is now up to you to change your lifestyle to maintain the results of a slimmer new you.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Tummy Tucks are ideal for men and women who have excess abdominal skin and rolls that tend to create an over-extend hanging lower belly. This often occurs with individuals who have achieved excess weight losses and/or pregnancy weight loss. In addition the internal muscles have also been stretched out leaving a protrusion of the internal abdomen wall or corset.
The Tummy Tuck requires an incision along the lower belly from hip to hip. Both the internal abdominal structures are tightened and the excess skin and rolls are removed leaving you with a very flat and tight abdomen.
The recovery will range from 3 to 4 weeks in terms of people being able to return to work for desk-type positions. Twelve weeks would be needed for more strenuous type of work.
While the recovery may be extensive, the results of a tummy tuck which is a flat trim abdomen lasts a lifetime as long as you continue a healthy lifestyle.
Mommy Makeovers and After Weight Loss Surgeries
Mommy Makeovers or After Weight Loss Surgeries usually involve a combination of rejuvenating both women’s breasts with a cosmetic surgery of the abdomen either through the tummy tuck and/or liposuction procedures as described above. The breast surgeries can include a breast augmentation, breast lift or a combination of both.
Combining the breast and abdomen procedures will depend on the specific procedures for each. Breast Augmentations can be performed at the same time as liposuction or tummy tuck.
A breast lift can be performed at the same time as liposuction. The only two procedures that require the surgeries to be separated by a space of at least 3-4 weeks would be a breast lift and a tummy tuck.
