With its recent decision to re-approve silicone gel for breast enhancement in Baltimore, Maryland and across the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave women back their choices. While many patients feel comfortable with the saline-filled implants that have been used with success by Baltimore plastic surgeons for years, many others prefer the natural feel of silicone gel implants. Dr. Dean Kane has over 27 years experience with both silicone and saline implants; he can help you make the right decision.
Dr. Kane invites you to come in to the Center for Cosmetic Surgery & MediSpa for a consultation. He makes it a point to spend time with each of his Baltimore breast enlargement patients, knowing they have many questions to ask and decisions to make. He’ll take all the time you need to discuss not only implant type, but placement, size and other considerations as well.
Breast augmentation is an exciting, fulfilling process. Why not request a consultation with Dr. Kane right now and get started?
Saline Breast Augmentation in Baltimore
Some women find saline implants to be the best choice. Not only is the solution—also called salt water, “normal saline” and “sterile isotonic saline”—completely safe, it’s also harmlessly absorbed by the body should a rupture occur. When leaks happen, as they do eventually, it’s easy to tell that an implant needs to be replaced.
Most models of saline implants are filled after insertion. This means that incisions can be smaller for some patients and it can mean additional flexibility in adjusting for size and asymmetric breasts as well.
Silicone Gel Breast Implants
Bowing to concerns about silicone leakage associated with older generations of implants, the FDA banned silicone-filled implants for most patients in the U.S. in 1992. After fourteen years of continued study, during which product improvements continued to be made, silicone implants filled with what’s known as “cohesive gel” were re-approved by the FDA.
Today’s silicone implants with their semi-solid filling offer several advantages for Baltimore breast augmentation patients. Silicone gel is considered to be quite safe for use within the body. Indeed, silicone is used in a variety of medical applications including artificial joints and heart devices. If the implant cover should leak, which may happen over time, the cohesive gel is likely to stay within the breast capsule.
Perhaps the most compelling advantage silicone gel breast implants offer Maryland patients is their soft, natural look and feel. Many women find their aesthetic appeal to be far superior to the saline alternative.
