Anti-Aging in the Modern Age

The modern cyber technology we use today to live, work and play, is also extremely relevant in medicine and to help us learn how we anti-age. Medicine today offers us better ability to diagnosis, treat  and prevent medical problems.  By staying healthy we are in essence anti-aging. Modern cosmetic medicine has helped us to  look as good as we feel.  In today’s modern cosmetic surgeon’s office, surgery plays a much less dominant role while an array of non-surgical approaches predominately helps the masses to turn back the clock. For example in 2012 it was reported that 6.1 million injections of Botox took place. Botox is known to stop the muscle from sqeezing which in turn stops the wrinkling and frowning of our brows. Fillers such as Perlane, Restylane, Radiesse, Juvederm Ultra all give us instant ability to plump and fill the wrinkles on our faces. Sculptra the latest in helping us stay youthful occurs by stimulating your collagen production keeping the face full and smooth. Medspa services using lasers, peels and advanced skin products penetrate deep into the skin to reverse the aging process skin deep. Yes we now have a huge assortment of procedures to turn back the clock in this Cyber Age. Understanding Aging to Effectivelly Anti-Age But to truly understand how effective these non-surgical approaches are to keep us in an anti-aging mode we first have to understand the aging process and its key role in knowing how to stop it, reverse it and keep it from showing on our faces. So while we may have to age in years, our goals are to keep the aging effects off the face and on the calendar only. So what happens to our faces as we age naturally? How does your lifestyle affect both how you age and how effective your cosmetic facial treatments will work and last? What can you as a patient do to help yourself stay forever refreshed and youthful? The natural progression of the aging process in particular to the face is that we tend to lose fat, collagen, bone and cartilage. The fat and collagen on a youthful face are compacted into compartments.  As we age, we not only lose the thickness of fat and collagen in these compartments, but the compartments begin to shrink and fall down the face leaving hollows and folds in their wake. This is when people complain of seeing the hollows under the eyes, under the cheeks, nasal folds and jowling along the jaw line. In addition, we have losses of bone and cartilage in the jaw line, around the nose and in the cheeks that cause a concavity of the face and a receding jaw line. In the elderly person you tend to see the face losing his prominence and having a more sunken appearance. Why some people age more than others Why do some people age more than others? Genetics and lifestyles play an enormous role. While we can’t do anything about the genetics we were born with, we can make lifestyle changes that will increase or decrease the aging process. Environmental exposures such as cold, sun and dryness causes the face to weather more and look more aged. Smoking cigarettes, alcohol and social drugs have a tremendous impact on the aging process. Stress, anxiety, life events and life pressures causes havoc with our immune system which in turn also plays a key role in the aging of faces and body. What we eat is what we are. Not maintaining a good diet rich in anti-oxidants and proteins and lacking a good exercise program all contribute to aging. Obviously changing all these factors into a positive healthy lifestyle will help you reduce the aging process considerably. The Challenge for the Cosmetic Doctor The challenge for the cosmetic doctor in trying to offer solutions to patients to reverse the aging process and attain rejuvenation of the face is that all these same really bad lifestyle factors greatly reduces the effectiveness of the treatments that are being offered. So many people come to our office and say the filler didn’t work or the Botox didn’t last as long as the last time, but they are living the same stresses and the same aging lifestyle that caused the problem in the first place. What needs to be addressed is the patient needs to change the factors that are causing their aging in order for the treatments to be optimized and used to their fullest potential. A person who keeps sun tanning or smokes are undoing all the good effects of the treatments being offered. In the Baltimore plastic surgery office of Dr. Dean Kane, and his wife Lauri Kane, work to educate their patients to understand the importance of changing their lifestyles to improve their health and wellbeing and in turn optimize the effectiveness of both their surgical facial procedures as well as the non-surgical treatments such as Dysport, Botox, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra. This is true in their Medspa at the Center for Cosmetic Surgery where they offer a comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation with the newest revolutionary version of Dr.Zein Obagi’s New ZO medical skin products. We can achieve beautiful and glowing healthy skin as long as patients will use adequate sun protection and again reduce the bad lifestyle habits, in particular cigarette smoking.
